New Delhi --- Congress on Monday sought to play down party chief Sonia Gandhi's meeting with a delegation of the Press Club of India office-bearers as a gesture to the media institution.

"There were many requests from the Press Club for a long time; for Congress what mattered was the institution," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

Responding to questions in the context of the TOI report about Sonia becoming an honourary member of the Club, Singhvi termed it as an old convention. "There has been a convention to offer honorary membership to dignitaries," he said.

Singhvi said that the office-bearers had been given audience with the Congress president because they represented the Press Club. "Who these office-bearers are is not our headache," he said.
