Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba formally inaugurated the second Metro channel, Metro Channel-2, of the state-owned Nepal Television (NTV) on the occasion of its 20th anniversary Sunday.
In the inaugural speech, Prime Minister Deuba appreciated the important role played by NTV to make aware and educate the people in remote parts of the country.
Prime Minister Deuba also suggested the NTV staff to become more efficient and resulted oriented to inform and educate the people.
On the occasion, General Manager of NTV, Durga Nath Sharma, highlighted the increasing coverage area of NTV and its activities.
Nepal Television (NTV) was started as a project with financial assistance from the People’s Republic of China in January 1985, as the country’s first domestic television channel.
The launching of a television channel from within the country at a time when there were only a few media organizations, mostly state-run, was a step forward to serve the people- especially those on the rural areas- with news, views and entertainment programmes.
NTV started its broadcasting via satellite from 4th July 2001 to upgrade the signal quality of the existing terrestrial relay stations and to make the signal available outside the country.
After its satellite transmission, NTV can be watched from outside Nepal- in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, Greece, Hong Kong, India (Mid-northern parts) and Iran.
It can also be watched in Iraq, Japan, Laos (Northern parts), Mongolia, most parts of Russia, North Korea, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand (Northern parts), Turkey and Vietnam (Northern parts).
