MediaWorks's Channel i News has been voted the best in Asia, winning the Best General News Programme title at the Eighth Asian Television Awards last night.

The two-year-old English programme on Singapore Press Holdings' television station beat such established names as CNN International's News Biz Today and Star News Asia, as well as the Philippines' TV Patrol by ABS CBN Broadcasting.

Said a jubilant Ms Jennifer Lewis, the programme's editor: 'I feel very, very proud mainly because we have come so far in two years with a very small team.'

Laughingly, she added: 'We call our bulletin, The Miracle Bulletin, because of our tight daily deadline, broadcasting at 8.30pm.'

Singapore did well last night, with MediaWorks bagging four awards and MediaCorp, seven. The awards were organised by Television Asia, a broadcast magazine based here, sponsored largely by the Media Development Authority and held at the University Cultural Hall.

MediaWorks' Channel U Chinese channel took home the Best Entertainment Programme award for its variety show, Top 10.

In addition, co-host Kym Ng was crowned Best Entertainment Presenter. Channel U also won for Best Art Direction (Long Form) for its drama serial, The Romance of the Book and Sword.

MediaCorp's Channel 5 was voted Terrestrial Channel Of The Year, Gurmit Singh of Phua Chu Kang, Best Comedy Actor, Hongkong star Lydia Sum, Best Comedy Actress for Living with Lydia, and Vernetta Lopez, Best Drama Actress for CeCiliation.

The Phua Chu Kang episode The Parent Trap was the Best Comedy Programme and The Singapore Short Story Project got the Best Drama Series as well as the Best Cinematography awards.

More than 195 entries from 14 countries were shortlisted for the awards.

Mr Mun Shu Sam, MediaWorks' chief operating officer, said: 'We took four awards. To us, it is big recognition.'
