Herald Media Inc. celebrated its 50th anniversary last night with a gala event at the Lotte Hotel Seoul with over 1,000 guests in attendance. Herald Media Inc. publishes The Korea Herald, which was founded in August 1953, and The Herald Business, which is commemorating 30 years since its inception in December 1973.
"I sincerely wish for Herald Media Inc. to achieve even greater success in the future, underpinned by The Korea Herald, which represents Korea to the world, and The Herald Business, which looks out at the globe," said President Roh Moo-hyun in a congratulatory message.
Hong Jung-wook, chairman and CEO of Herald Media Inc., described the company as "Korea's window to the world" and expressed his determination to transform it into a pioneer and a leader in Korea's knowledge-information industries.
Those who joined the celebration included Prime Minister Goh Kun, Grand National Party floor leader Hong Sa-duk and Uri Party lawmaker Chyung Dai-chul.
Chae Soo-sam, CEO of the Korea Daily News, Choi Joon-myeong, president and publisher of the Korea Economic Daily, and Sa Kwang-hee, president and publisher of the Segye Times, were among the media executives in attendance.
Fashion designer Andre Kim, pop singer Se7en and actresses Kim Jung-eun and Kim Sun-ah added to the festive mood with their presence.
The Korea Herald began as a four-page tabloid called The Korean Republic. It adopted its current name in 1965. Since then, The Korea Herald has grown to become the nation's largest-circulation English newspaper, committed to providing a bridge of information between Korea and the world.
The Herald Business was originally established as the Naeway Economic Daily but was reborn this year to embrace a new "fusion" concept encompassing both business and entertainment news. The venture was a first in local journalism that reflected the future-oriented spirit of the company.
