Kathmandu -- The government, in a circular issued last month, has directed government agencies that no media, other than state-run ones, be given government advertisements.

The Ministry of Information and Communications, in a circular issued to government agencies in March said the government was preparing a new policy on advertisements given by government agencies, and hence only state run media be given the government advertisements.

The decision to this effect was taken on March 15, according to reports. Government advertisements covers 25 percent of the overall advertisement market in the country.

However, Minister Information and Communications Tanka Dhakal in a program on Sunday had said that the ban on government advertisement in private media was a rumour. He, moreover, clarified that the government had no plans to practice such biased policies in the sector.
