Overview of AsiaMedia
What is AsiaMedia?
AsiaMedia is a nonprofit and nonpartisan service. It was established by Tom Plate (UCLA Dept. of Communication Studies) in 1998. Published by the UCLA Asia Institute since 2003, AsiaMedia, with the support of its media partners, aims to foster greater understanding of media developments throughout Asia and the Pacific. AsiaMedia delivers news about all aspects of the media, including its role in regional and national economies, societies, and political debate. In addition, AsiaMedia publishes commentary by a range of journalists, scholars, and policy makers. The site also aims to offer feature articles on media trends, interviews with leading figures in the media, and a resources section with statistics.
We believe that the region is developing ways to address its common problems. The news media, government-information offices and leading business institutions of the region have a vital role to play in public understanding, as do the regions leading academic institutions and foundations. AsiaMedia works to bring these vital worlds into closer contact.
Funding
AsiaMedia has received significant and much appreciated support from a number of prominent media organizations and individuals. We rely on donations from people and institutions who find it useful and appreciate its commitment to fostering discussion of the place of the media and how the work of journalists can be improved.
Editorial Philosophy
We believe that constant, regular contact and a deep commitment to better understanding can contribute to regional consensus on key issues. AsiaMedia enables readers to easily and regularly follow media developments throughout the region. This exposure should heighten understanding and provide a foundation for better relationships across boundaries of all sorts.
How can I help?
Three formal levels of membership exist: founding media member, associate, and supporter. (Click here to learn more about these levels.) Memberships start at only $100 though we're happy to accept less if that's your preference. These donations are completely tax deductible.
