The government said Friday it would block porn websites next month as it kicked off its free internet service program to senior high schools across the country.
"With a free internet service, our internet users will jump from 25 million to about 50 million users," Information and Communication Minister Muhammad Nuh said after inaugurating an information technology laboratory at Al Akbar mosque, Surabaya. "However, this will also bring negative consequences as people will easily access porn sites. Therefore we will ban porn sites next month."
The ban would be carried out through software installation at high school local area networks, cooperation with internet service providers, and people awareness movement, he said.
"At high schools, the software will automatically disallow a computer to display a porn website when someone tries to access it," Nuh said.
The country's internet service providers would also be urged to prohibit their customers from accessing porn websites, he added.
